ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst police arrested a woman who stole phones from two men giving her rides and carried a baggie of drugs in the back of her pants, police said. She is also accused of kicking police officers. The woman was identified as Makayla R. Vaughn, 20, of Darien. The full police report of her arrest was obtained through a public records request. About noon March 2, Elmhurst police officers responded to a report of a parked 2020 Honda Civic at Emroy and North avenues that was causing traffic problems, according to the police report. Officers got a description of Vaughn and found her in the Starbucks parking lot at 624 N. York St. According to the report, a man had just informed police that he had given a ride to a woman matching Vaughn's description. The Honda had run out of gas, and he took her to Thorntons gas station, 476 N. York St. While in custody, an officer noticed that Vaughn reached down the back of her pants. A female officer found an iPhone, police said. All along, Vaughn screamed and swore at officers, the report said. At the police station, Vaughn repeatedly kicked the female officer's leg, so officers restrained her with handcuffs, police said. Vaughn again was seen reaching into the pack of her pants. An officer saw a small bulge that crinkled when poked, police said. The female officer retrieved a small baggie containing Xanax as well as suspected heroin and amphetamine, the report said. Later, Vaughn repeatedly kicked another officer, with an imprint of her shoe seen on the officer's leg, according to police. Vaughn said she was pregnant, but changed her story on how far along she was in the pregnancy, at one point saying 14 months, police said. If that was so, it would be among the longest pregnancies in history. In an interview with police, a man said he saw that Vaughn appeared in distress because she ran out of gas. He offered to take her to Thorntons. Once she left his car, he noticed his iPhone was missing from his cupholder, police said. He confronted the woman. When she opened her purse, he saw his phone, retrieved it and left, police said. The Honda had been reported stolen in Bartlett earlier that morning, police said. In an interview with police, Vaughn said a man had given her the keys to the Honda so that she could go to a medical appointment. When she ran out of gas, a man had offered to give her a ride. She told police she had mistakenly taken his phone, thinking it was hers. Vaughn then got a ride from another man to Starbucks. She told police she stole that man's phone because she was angry that he asked her for sexual favors. That was the phone found in her pants. According to the police report, Vaughn admitted she was a heroin addict and had been using the drug for four years. She said she kicked the officers because she did not want them to find the drugs, police said. Vaughn was charged with three counts of aggravated battery, two counts of unlawful possession of a controlled substance, criminal trespass to a motor vehicle, two counts of theft, obstructing identification and driving with a suspended license. She was also arrested on warrants from the sheriff's offices in DuPage and Will counties. She was taken to the DuPage County Jail.
