SEARCH AND ARREST WARRANT SERVICE
Berkeley, California (Thursday, March 18, 2021) - On 3/18/21 at 7:00 a.m. the Berkeley Police Department Special Response Team (SRT) assisted BPD Detective Division in serving search and arrest warrants at a residence on Alcatraz Avenue near Sacramento Street.
The warrants were obtained by detectives investigating a shooting that occurred in Berkeley. Based on the nature of the crime and other facts in this case, our standard procedures call for having SRT serve high risk warrants of this nature (SRT is Berkeley PD's name for our 'SWAT' team).
Special Response Team members surrounded and isolated the warrant location. The subject of the investigation was contacted and exited along with other occupants. The subject did not immediately comply with directions, and SRT utilized trained negotiators, who spoke to the subject for nearly 45 minutes while the individual was standing on the front lawn of the house.
The negotiators were successful in de-escalating the person during this stressful and volatile encounter. SRT members safely arrested the person for the warrant without any injuries or other issues.
Following the arrest, SRT members conducted a safety sweep of the house. After verifying the location was safe, the scene was turned over to detectives to conduct a search for evidence as authorized by the search warrant.
The safety and security of the residents of Berkeley are always our first priority. In this operation we were able to safely detain and arrest a wanted individual using trained personnel from our Detective Division, the Special Response Team, and patrol officers.
