MELROSE, MA — Green Street Pharmacy, one of the very last independently owned pharmacies around, is closing later this month. The pharmacy's last day will be March 25. Don Putney, the former longtime owner who still works there, is selling the building the pharmacy is in. "It's a positive thing, not a negative thing," he told Patch. "It's time to retire." The pharmacy started in 1910 where the Bank of America ATM now stands on the corner of West Foster and Main streets. Putney moved it to Green Street in 1980. The pharmacy has served generations of Melrosians, but now it's time to close the doors. Putney said he's looking forward to visiting the British Isles when the pandemic passes. "We will miss them," Mayor Paul Brodeur said in an interview on "Let's Talk Melrose, Melrose" shortly after the news came out Tuesday night. Customers will have their prescriptions confidentially transferred to CVS at 884 Main St. Mike Carraggi can be reached at [email protected]. Follow him on Twitter @PatchCarraggi.
