Press release from the Town of Lexington: March 15, 2021 There are underground gas lines throughout Lexington, along with water, sewer, electric, phone and cable lines. Nationally every nine minutes, an underground utility line is damaged because someone didn't contact 8-1-1 before digging. Homeowners and contractors, please remember the importance of calling 8-1-1 prior to digging. Notify 811 well in advance of digging or moving earth in any way – even for small jobs. Respect the locate marks and follow them when digging. Dig with care in the vicinity of underground natural gas pipelines. If you find an unmarked or mismarked line, stop digging and notify 811. Report any suspicious activity near a natural gas pipeline marker. Don't rely on your nose alone. Be alert for the many warning signs of a natural gas leak. Know what to do if your equipment contacts a natural gas pipeline. If you smell gas anywhere, including in your home, go outside immediately and call 9-1-1, then National Grid's MA emergency number, 1-800-233-5325.
