Description
From the City of West Palm Beach:
March 17, 2021
During the City Commission meeting on March 8, 2021, commissioners approved the addition of the following to the West Palm Beach Register of Historic Places: Northwood Hills, the Yeckes Family Chapel (2814 Poinsettia Ave.) and the William Ohlhaber House (215 Pilgrim Road).
Northwood Hills is historically significant for its collection of architecture representative of the period from 1925 to 1971. The area is home to multiple Mission Revival style houses, as well as houses that reflect post-war architecture. The district maintains the integrity of setting, design, materials and scale reminiscent of its development during the Florida Land Boom era of the 1920s, the Great Depression, the Post-War Period and the Cold War Period.
The Yeckes Family Chapel, formerly known as Temple Beth Israel, is the oldest synagogue in Palm Beach County. The temple was completed in 1924.
The William Ohlhaber House is a two-story Mission Revival structure located just outside the City's Historic Northwest District. In 1916, William Ohlhaber, a renowned architect, relocated to West Palm Beach with the intention of retiring. Instead, he became a real estate investor and designated at least five properties within the city.
The City of West Palm Beach has 17 historic districts and nearly 50 individual sites on the local register. The City's historic preservation ordinance is designed to identify, protect, restore and encourage reuse of resources. This is essential to the City's public health and safety, as well as its economical, educational, cultural and general welfare.
