Description

Press release from Friends of the Bay: March 16, 2021 Thursday, March 25, at 7 p.m. The March Speaker Series online presentation will provide information about how you can help our local waters by gardening oysters. Since 2017 hundreds of families, individuals, Boy and Girl Scouts, church groups, and yacht, bathing and garden clubs have planted tens of thousands of oysters in a protected spawner sanctuary in Cold Spring Harbor. Learn how oysters serve as "ecosystem engineers" improving water quality, enhancing habitat and protecting shorelines from damaging storms. Friends of the Bay is a partner of the Community Oyster Gardening Program, which is an outreach program of the intermunicipal Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee to educate and engage residents in protecting their local waters. After hearing the presentation, we hope you will want to jump in to become an oyster gardener in 2021. Rob has been coordinator of the Oyster Bay/Cold Spring Harbor Protection Committee since 2012 and is the Waterfront Director and Development Associate at SUNY Maritime College. Rob previously served as Executive Director of Friends of the Bay and The WaterFront Center. The free event will be held via Zoom.
