PHILADELPHIA — Philly is once again finding itself the backdrop for a highly-anticipated film that just got a release date. "Concrete Cowboy," which was shot in Philadelphia and is set in Philadelphia, will premier on Netflix April 2. The film stars English actor Idris Elba, known for "The Wire," "Thor: Ragnarock," and "Beasts of No Nation" among others and Caleb McLaughlin of "Stranger Things" fame. The pair portrays a father and son who reunite through horseback riding via the "urban cowboy" lifestyle that Philadelphians have come to know. Below is a synopsis from Netflix: While spending the summer in North Philadelphia, a troubled teen is caught between a life of crime and his estranged father's vibrant urban-cowboy subculture. "Concrete Cowboy" was directed and written by Ricky Staub, with co-writer Dan Walser, and based on the novel "Ghetto Cowboy" by Greg Neri. Staub and Walser wrote the screenplay for the feature after see real-life urban cowboys in Philadelphia. While doing research on the Fletcher Street Urban Riding Club, it ultimately led Staub to discover Neri's book.
