Description

A workshop for midwives and students on the topics of Twins, breech, External Cephalic Version and a Pharmacology Review. Information about the Workshop Historically midwives took care of all pregnant women, including serving women carrying breech and twins. Although the medical establishment has sought to discredit midwifery knowledge and label these situations 'high risk', the bottom line is that even if your state has 'outlawed' midwives from attending these types of births, all midwives will occasionally attend a surprise breech and even surprise twins birth - knowing these skills is essential for all types of birth attendants! If you practice in an area where these birth scenarios are still within your scope, then you may choose to consciously offer your skills to women carrying breech or twin pregnancies - and this is the class to help you prepare from the diagnosis all the way to the delivery! One day intensive workshop for midwives and senior students on these topics: • Preparation is the name of the game - what you need to know to promote safety • Screening for twins and breech in your practice • The skill of palpation - don't miss the breech • Review of mother-led turning techniques • Diagnosed 'high risk', now what?, Informed decision-making with your clients • Managing a twin pregnancy from diagnosis to delivery • Timing for twin births; knowing when to act • Assessing baby for position, station, and well-being • Gentle External Breech Version (ECV) in pregnancy • Cardinal movements for the normal breech delivery • Breech extraction techniques for the abnormal breech delivery • Evaluation of risk factors for breech and multiples • Considerations for the immediate postpartum • Midwifing yourself through boundary setting This full day workshop takes the participant on a journey through the midwifery management of breech & twin pregnancies and births, supporting the parents through the informed decision making process, mitigating personal liability, as well as learning the transport decision algorithm. Pharmacology • Midwifery pharmacology review • Considerations for monitoring during IV therapy • Documenting Venipuncture and meds given • What, when, why, who, & how much Midwives need to be competent and skilled in medication choice and administration for the health and safety of the mothers and infants they serve. This 2 hour review will bring confidence to students and senior midwives alike.
