NEWTON, MA — A Newton man, the owner of a local landscaping company was charged Monday with tax evasion in connection with a scheme to underreport income on his business and personal tax returns.
Kevin Newman, 70, of Auburndale, the owner of Kevin Newman Landscape and Tree Inc., has agreed to plead guilty to one count of tax evasion, according to Acting United States Attorney Nathaniel Mendell and Acting Special Agent in Charge of the Internal Revenue Service's Criminal Investigations in Boston Ramsey Covington.
From 2015 through 2019, Newman underreported income and inflated expenses on both his personal tax returns, and the returns his company filed, resulting in a tax loss of more than $384,000, prosecutors said.
If convicted, he could face up to five years in prison and a fine of $250,000 for the charge of tax evasion.
