Raise your hand if you saw this one coming: LeBron James, Red Sox owner.
The NBA great and longtime Boston Celtics nemesis has become a partner in Fenway Sports Group, according to multiple reports. Fenway Sports Group owns the Boston Red Sox, NESN, Liverpool Football Club, Fenway Roush Racing and Fenway Sports Management..
James was joined by friend and business partner Maverick Carter, becoming the first Black partners in Fenway Sports Group.
The Boston Globe reported Fenway Sports Group also Tuesday approved a $750 million investment from New York-based RedBird Capital Partners, allowing the sports conglomerate to potentially pursue other professional sports teams such as an NFL or NHL franchise.
But the big news of the day for Sox fans is James joining the ownership group.
James, 36, is one of the most recognizable, influential and successful athletes of the 21st century. He's also been in some heated rivalries against the Boston Celtics and is currently a member of a Los Angeles Lakers franchise that has always butted heads with Boston.
For as dominant he's remained on the court — the four-time MVP won another NBA championship last season — James has been flexing his muscle in the business world for years. He already owned 2 percent of Liverpool and along with Carter owns a production company.
