Phoenix Police Department's mission is to serve and protect their community while treating everyone with dignity and respect. They are now looking for new individuals to join their team. "It is the goal of the Phoenix Police Department to reduce crime while being responsive to the community we serve, as well as to continually improve both as an organization and as individual employees. The Department is also committed to the health, well-being and development of its employees," said Phoenix PD PIO, Ann E. Justus. Phoenix PD is one of the largest departments in Arizona, and nationally. Cody Telep, Professor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at ASU, made some statements about how Phoenix PD compares to other police departments nationwide. "It's always hard to make comparisons across police departments, because there's so many of them - more than 18,000 total nationally. So for sure Phoenix PD stands out in terms of its size. Given that Phoenix is a huge city, it's not surprising that the department is also very large," said Telep. According to Telep, one thing that makes Phoenix PD unique is who they appointed as their police chief. About 97% of police departments nationally have a male chief, but Phx PD appointed a Black woman, Jeri Williams, as their police chief. This factor alone makes their department stand out among others. Although they are doing a good job with their efforts, Phoenix PD actively recognizes where there is room for improvement to make their department even stronger. "The Phoenix Police Department works to maintain an open line of communication with community members and leaders. Each precinct is equipped with Community Action Officers who regularly attend community meetings and work with the public. Additionally, we work to maintain transparency with our community which includes the release of Critical Incident Briefing Videos within two weeks of occurrence," said Justus. These briefing videos are released in case of negative responses to critical incidents which are dealt with by the department's transparency program. This program allows Phoenix PD to build a stronger sense of trust with the community, as well as reflect on the way their officers handle situations. "Members of our team must have moral character, personal integrity, credibility, and professionalism," said a sergeant in the Phoenix patrol division. "Our main goals in relation to providing for our community is the protection of citizens and the prevention of crime." With the current state of police departments nationwide, it is essential now more than ever that Phoenix PD acquire quality candidates to join their team, and carry out their mission of serving and protecting their community.
