BIRMINGHAM, AL — The threat of severe weather Wednesday across Alabama has prompted most of the schools in the Birmingham area to announce early dismissals for the day Wednesday. The National Weather Service has placed a significant part of the state in a "moderate risk" (level 4/5) category. This includes Birmingham, Montgomery, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden and Florence. The rest of the state is in either an enhanced or slight risk. Storms will be capable of producing large hail, damaging winds, and tornadoes, according to the National Weather Service. Schools that have announced modified schedules or closures for Wednesday include: Bessemer City Schools: Virtual learning WednesdayHighlands School: Dismisses at noon WednesdayHomewood City Schools: Classes dismissed at 1 p.m. WednesdayHoover City Schools: Elementary schools dismiss at 11:15 a.m. Wednesday, Brock's Gap Intermediate at 11:30 a.m., middle schools at 11:45 a.m., high schools at noon.i3 Academy: Classes will be held remotely WednesdayJefferson County Schools: Remote learning WednesdayMountain Brook Schools: Elementary students dismiss at 1 p.m., junior high and high school students will go virtualPelham City Schools: Classes will dismiss two hours early WednesdayShelby County Schools: Dismiss at 1 p.m. on WednesdayTarrant City Schools: All classes virtual WednesdayTrussville City Schools: Closed WednesdayVestavia Hills City Schools: Dismiss two hours early on Wednesday This list will be updated as more schools announce their plans.
