NEWTON, MA — Voters in Newton will head to the polls Tuesday, March 16, for the 2021 Special Election. There are two seats up for grabs. Voting will be different this year thanks to rules approved to expand early and mail-in voting in light of the coronavirus pandemic. You should check your voting status on the Secretary of State's website, where you can also find your polling place. Key RacesThere are two contested races on the ballot for Newton voters. Because they are councilor at large roles, the entire city is allowed to vote for them. In Ward 1, two candidates are vying to take over for the late Jay Ciccone. In Ward 2, there are three hopefuls to take the seat that Jake Auchincloss left when he won a seat in U.S. Congress. Ballots can be returned by mail or returned by hand to the clerk's office. They can also be returned to the drop boxes located at city hall until 8 p.m. March 16. Mail-in ballots need to be postmarked by March. 16. Early VotingEarly voting is now closed. From March 8 through March 12, registered voters were permitted to come to city hall to vote in person, early between 8:30 a.m. and 5 p.m..
