Rapidly Spreading Fire Breaks Out At Multi-Family Stamford Home

STAMFORD, CT — Firefighters worked to extinguish a "rapidly spreading" blaze in a congested neighborhood on the city's West Side early Sunday morning, according to the Stamford Fire Department. In a news release, Captain Philip Hayes said a house fire was reported on Dryden Street around 1 a.m. (To sign up for Stamford breaking news alerts and more, click here.) When firefighters arrived at the multi-family home, a "large volume" of fire visible throughout the front of the building was extending to the roof and attic, Hayes said. Using large hose lines, firefighters quickly extinguished all visible flames on the outside of the home and began work on the inside of the building, however crews were unable to access the attic due to flames and concerns about the building's structural integrity, Hayes said. After additional firefighters arrived and the fire spread to the attic and roof, crews were able to extinguish the flames using ladder nozzles from two of the department's aerial ladder trucks, Hayes said. The main body of fire was extinguished within an hour, however crews continued to extinguish remaining pockets of fire for several more hours, Hayes said. A total of 44 firefighters and other department personnel were present during the incident, and Stamford police and emergency medical services provided assistance, Hayes said. All residents of the home safely evacuated the building before firefighters arrived and no injuries were reported, Hayes said. The city fire marshal's office is investigating the cause of the fire.
