JOLIET, IL— A 36-year-old convicted felon in Joliet was arrested by officers early Saturday morning after police say that Jeremy Moffett was firing a stolen gun on the city's southeast side. During his arrest, Moffett let officers know he had crack cocaine in his pants, reports show. Moffett was booked into the Will County Jail around 3:30 a.m. Saturday. Joliet police say he was charged with aggravated unlawful use of a weapon by a convicted felon, possession of a stolen gun, aggravated unlawful use of a weapon, unlawful possession of ammunition, having no FOID, resisting the arrest and possession of a controlled substance. The incident that led to Moffett's arrest occurred around 1:50 a.m. According to police, gunshots were fired in the 100 block of Fifth Avenue and officers circling the neighborhood spotted an unoccupied car that had its engine running near the house where the bullets were fired. "While officers were checking the vehicle, Moffett exited the residence. Officers attempted to speak with Moffett regarding the shots being fired at which time Moffett attempted to flee back into the residence. Moffett began to struggle with officers," police reports show. During the struggle, Moffett had a gun in his waistband, according to police. The gun was taken by the officers who put the Joliet man in handcuffs. "After he was taken into custody, Moffett indicated to officers that he possessed crack cocaine in his pocket. Officers determined the firearm had been previously been reported stolen," Joliet Police Sgt. Dwayne English indicated. Will County Jail logs show that Moffett is now a free man. The resident of the 500 block of Florence Avenue posted 10 percent of his $100,000 bail around 7:15 p.m. Saturday.
