ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst's rate of increase in coronavirus cases dropped slightly last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, the city experienced 39 new cases in the last week, or a 1 percent hike. The increase was 1.1 percent the week before. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst stayed the same over the last week, at 60. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.6 percent. As of Sunday, Illinois' coronavirus case count increased to 1,207,847, up seven-tenths of 1 percent from a week earlier. The coronavirus has claimed the lives of 20,924 state residents. Nationally, 29.2 million people have caught the virus, up 1.6 percent from the week before. A total of 530,693 people have died from the virus in the United States. As of Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was caring for 14 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. That is up by seven from the previous week. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 173 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is the same as a week ago. Since March, 1,595 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
