ELMHURST, IL — Elmhurst's rate of increase in coronavirus cases dropped slightly last week, according to the DuPage County Health Department. As of Sunday, the city experienced 39 new cases in the last week, or a 1 percent hike. The increase was 1.1 percent the week before. The number of those who have recovered is unavailable. As of Sunday, the number of coronavirus-related deaths in Elmhurst stayed the same over the last week, at 60. The mortality rate among those locally with the coronavirus is 1.6 percent. As of Monday, Elmhurst Hospital was caring for 14 patients with confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the coronavirus, according to the hospital. That is up by seven from the previous week. Since the beginning of the pandemic, 173 people have died from the coronavirus at the facility. The number is the same as a week ago. Since March, 1,595 patients have been discharged from Elmhurst Hospital following treatment for confirmed cases of COVID-19, according to the hospital. Elmhurst Hospital's patient base covers an area far greater than Elmhurst itself.
