The DePaul Blue Demons swept all three games at St. John's over the weekend. The series sweep improved DePaul's record to 10-7. DePaul started the sweep with an 8-0, 6 inning thumping of St. John's on Saturday. Krista Dalgarn held the Red Storm scoreless while striking out six, allowing only four hits and one walk. Dalgarn improved to 5-1. In the first inning, Maranda Gutierrez walked, Kate Polucha singled and Jessica Cothern popped up, but a throwing error scored Gutierrez. In the third, after Angela Scalzitti and Gutierrez were hit by pitches, Polucha crushed a three run homer to put DePaul up 4-0. Pearl Barroso led off the fourth with a walk. After Skylor Hilger singled, Gutierrez tripled both home. In the fifth inning, Tori Meyer hit a solo home run. In the sixth, Scalzitti singled and scored on a Gutierrez hit to end the scoring. The nightcap was a seesaw battle that produced the same end result. Dalgarn also picked up another win. Cothern put DePaul up 1-0 with a solo shot in the second. After Polucha doubled to start the fourth, Cothern homered again pushing the lead to 3-0, but St. John's answered with three in the bottom of the fourth and two more in the fifth to lead 5-3. DePaul came back in the seventh inning, scoring three runs to grab the win. Scalzitti singled, Gutierrez was hit by a pitch and Cothern walked before Brooke Johnson tripled everyone home, giving DePaul the 6-5 win. The final win in the series was another battle, with DePaul coming back from a 7-2 deficit to win 9-8. Natalie Halvorson picked up the win in relief to even her record at 3-3. After St. John's went up 4-0 in the first, DePaul answered with two runs in the second. Cothern singled, Johnson walked and Meyer and Nicole Sullivan reached on fielder's choice plays. Barroso doubled in two to make it 4-2. St. John's came back with three in the bottom of the third to stretch the lead to 7-2. In the fourth, Sullivan drove in Johnson who walked to start the inning. In the fifth, Cothern singled, Johnson doubled and Meyer singled to score Cothern. Sullivan hit into a fielder's choice to score Johnson, making it 7-5. St. John's came up with one run in their half of the fifth to make it 8-5. In the sixth, Gutierrez singled before Polucha homered to make it 8-7. A Cothern single and a Meyer walk put two runners on base for Sullivan who singled both in to make it 9-8. DePaul returns to action Saturday, March 20 when they host Providence in double header action at DePaul's Cacciatore Stadium. The teams also play one game on Sunday, March 21 to conclude DePaul's mini-homestand.
