UPPER EAST SIDE, NY — A man was fatally struck by a train Monday morning inside an Upper East Side subway tunnel, police said.
The accident happened around 6:17 a.m. in the northbound 4-5 train tunnel along Lexington Avenue between the 86th and 96th Street stations, police said.
The victim, who appeared to be in his 40s, was found unconscious and unresponsive after making contact with the train. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man appeared to be homeless, according to a police source.
According to the Daily News, the train involved was a rescue train that had been sent to pick up stranded passengers on a 4 train that had stalled near the 110th Street station. While racing along the express tracks, it struck the man, who had apparently been living inside the tunnel, the Daily News reported.
Details about the man's identity were not immediately available.
