BROOKHAVEN, GA — The city of Brookhaven needs the community's help to plant trees at Brookhaven Park this weekend. The nonprofit Brookhaven Park Conservancy earned two grants to support the community tree planting project: one from Park Pride for $2,500, and $3,000 from the city itself, according to a city press release. The value of all project costs exceeds $20,000 — a "significant investment" to improve Brookhaven Park. "The goal of this tree planting project is great, and in my opinion, greatly benefits the entire community by improving this forested area of the park," said Robert Kamm, a Brookhaven resident whose yard borders the project. "This area of the park has a wonderful wooded walking trail and is home to many native bird species." Eighteen 8-10 feet tall Little Gem Magnolias and Green Giant Thujas trees will be sourced from wholesale nurseries by Justin Viens, Conservancy board member and president of landscaping company Southern Gardener, the release said. Viens will oversee the tree-planting project, scheduled for this Saturday at 9 a.m. at Brookhaven Park, 4158 Peachtree Road NE. He will also coordinate the planting with Conservancy volunteers, including Boy Scout Troop 379, and others willing to help plant trees. Anyone interested in volunteering is asked to contact the Brookhaven Park Conservancy at its website. "For over 10 years, the Brookhaven Park Conservancy has actively improved Brookhaven Park for the benefit of all users, and this project is the Conservancy's second major tree planting initiative," Brookhaven City Council Member Madeleine Simmons said. "We are funding an important tree planting in Brookhaven Park's wooded area, a cherished natural oasis in the center of our City. I appreciate Park Pride's financial and organizational support of the Brookhaven Park Conservancy and the City of Brookhaven's many parks."
