Not a Nation of Immigrants: Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, and a History of Erasure and Exclusion Part of the Race and International History 2021 Speaker Series April 6: Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz1:00 pm - 2:15 pm ESTEmeritus, California State University Author of An Indigenous History of the United StatesNot a Nation of Immigrants: Settler Colonialism, White Supremacy, and a History of Erasure and ExclusionAs an analysis of the construction of race and racism, this forthcoming book is an autopsy of the construction of settler-colonialism demonstrating both the historical inaccuracy as well as the strategic blind spot created by thinking of the United States as a 'nation of immigrants.' It also links the construction of the United States as a racial settler state with the growth of United States’ imperialism, demonstrating that global expansion was not accidental nor a matter of policy alone, but the direct outcome of the DNA of the racial settler state. It demonstrates how profoundly the settler-colonial history of the United States and the ideology of white nativism has shaped both immigration policy and immigrant identity. This event is open to the public. Webinar details will be sent to registered participants approximately 24 hours before the event begins. Closed captioning will be available.Interested in hearing about other SIS Office of Research events?
