Description

Map your way to new territory. Learn to use maps in art as a visual storytelling tool, connecting us to geography, history, and each other. Artist, poet, and cultural critic Kim Nicolini will give a talk and demonstration of how she has used maps in her art practice to give visual access to her story and the broader geographic and historic context within it resides. She will also talk about maps as language and allowing access to stories that are sometimes difficult to tell with traditional language. Explore the aesthetics and language of maps and the many ways their territory can help navigate the territory of your story and how to tell it with visual arts. In this workshop, everyone will have an opportunity to tell and share (voluntarily) their story (or one of many stories) using maps and other media. Kim will provide maps and a wide variety of supplies for all, but feel free to bring your own maps, photographs, or other materials to incorporate into your story. At the end of the workshop, everyone will have a map-story to share, take home, hang in the gallery, or give as a gift to a loved one.
