EQUESTRIAN INSTRUCTOR Position Announcement Organizational Mission: Our mission is to bring out the limitless potential in young leaders through extraordinary experiences and nurturing relationships. Position Mission: To facilitate the delivery of programming that offers growth and meaningful progression for youth during the summer. REPORTING AND RELATIONSHIPS You report to the Camp Program Manager and the Equine Consultant and provide supervision to counselors and program assistants assigned to support equestrian programming. POSITION AVAILABILITY You will have responsibilities from 7:00am to 9:00pm on a typical day during summer camp sessions. You will live at Lake Valley Camp during your employment and share living quarters with other employees. You are expected to attend two weeks of staff training at Lake Valley Camp prior to the start of the camp sessions. BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY You ensure that participants and employees are in a safe and healthy environment while participating in your program area and during general camp activities; this includes the physical and emotional environment. You oversee the delivery of age-appropriate and engaging Equestrian programming for the camp community. You will be responsible for structuring lesson plans and teaching campers basic horsemanship in an arena setting (note: campers begin riding with little to no experience.) You will be responsible for maintaining a herd of 8 horses and overall management of the barn (to include: maintaining the feed, water, grain, supplements, wound care, and knowledge of turnout.) You will recognize and report to the Equine Consultant or the Director of Camp Programs any program hazards and ensure those hazards are addressed before the program continues. You will actively participate and assist in the preparation and implementation of camp, including All Camp activities, staff training, bus duty, inventory/clean-up and more. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Key competencies: Grit, Growth Mindset, Self Management, Teamwork, Empathy, and Initiative You believe that with the right support and access to quality programs and experiences, all young people are able to achieve at the highest level imaginable. You have a proven skill and talent in the delivery of Equestrian programs; ability to manage and give direction to people who are assisting in Equestrian programs. You remain calm in stressful situations and are able to make critical decisions in a quick and logical manner to minimize risk and to ensure the safety and well-being of participants and staff. You should have hands-on experience handling horses with a good understanding of their nature (flight response) and the ability to foresee dangerous situations. You should be knowledgeable and comfortable while riding both in the arena and out on the trail. You are responsible for overseeing the delivery of age/skill level-appropriate and engaging Equestrian programming for the camp community. CERTIFICATIONS A current certification as an instructor from a nationally recognized organization or riding school is preferred. Documented endorsements of successful experience in formal horseback riding instruction required (must be able to provide documentation or references). Western (preferred) or English background. Valid CPR and First Aid certification is required within the first 30 days of employment (PEAK can support in attaining). EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE Previous equine work experience at a summer camp is preferred. Previous herd management preferred. PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS You must be physically and mentally able to meet the challenges of navigating and working in a remote, natural resident camp setting. Summer camp jobs are seasonal and hours are irregular, including nights and weekends. Employees must have the ability to maintain a positive attitude under adverse conditions (i.e. hot weather, rainy weather, long days, being woken up at night by campers, etc.). Must be able to work outside for sustained periods of time.
