Camp Counselor Position Announcement Organizational Mission: Our mission is to bring out the limitless potential in young leaders through extraordinary experiences and nurturing relationships. (Translation: Help young people be amazing by helping them access incredible things while meeting incredible people) Position Mission: To be the ambassador of awesome and inclusion to youth from the city of Milwaukee in a natural world of exploration at Lake Valley Camp. REPORTING AND RELATIONSHIPS As a Cabin Counselor, you will live in a cabin with a co-counselor and 8 young campers who will be under your watch. The Village Coordinator is the person you report to, they report to camp leadership, camp leadership reports to our executive director and our executive director reports to our campers...so, you sort of report to our campers. You may also be asked to work with your Village Coordinator to help support the growth of a Junior Counselor (if assigned to your cabin as a co-counselor). This Junior Counselor was once a camper themselves, now a fully grown person, so they might have some useful tips for you! POSITION AVAILABILITY Summertime! The journey starts when school lets out and summer break starts and continues until it’s time for campers to go back to the grind. The sunny days and star filled nights are packed full of activity and we won’t lie to you, there are some long exhausting days at camp. Fortunately the fun, laughter, and friendships make it all worth it! The day starts with early wake-up, a circle up (then coffee), and on a typical day you will be on duty in some form or another until everyone’s sweaty and asleep, including you. The standard camp session is 12 days with scheduled off time during session, and longer off time on weekends between sessions when many counselors go home, or on excursions with their co-counselors and other camp staff. If this sounds a bit intimidating don’t worry, we will give you all the tools and professional development you need to prepare before campers arrive at our immersive two-week staff training. You’ll be great! BASIC FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITY Set the tone and guide a group of young people on a journey of self-exploration, challenge, and fun for 2 weeks at a time. As cabin counselor you are the person campers will remember and tell their families and friends about for years to come. You are the most important individual when it comes to making sure they are encouraged, safe, active, accepted, well-rested and generally cared for. Guide your campers through their fear, frustration, lots of laughter, bumps, bruises, learning through failure and moments of absolutely amazing accomplishment. You will actively participate and assist in the preparation and implementation of camp, including “All Camp” activities, staff training, bus duty, inventory/clean-up and more. REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES Key competencies: Grit, Growth Mindset, Self Management, Teamwork, Empathy, and Initiative You believe that with the right supports and access to quality programs and experiences, all young people are able to achieve at the highest level imaginable. You are enthusiastic about new experiences and you can self-manage to bring a consistent level of energy all summer long. You are comfortable and able to work independently, and you understand and value the power of team accomplishments and are a team player. You are calm and patient, you don’t let little things wreck your day. You can take direction and are OK with feedback that will make you more awesome in serving the PEAK mission. You value diversity and are excited to work with peers and youth who may have different looks, beliefs, values, races, gender identities, abilities, experiences...etc. etc...than you. You care about the well-being of others and are invested in seeing our young people thrive. You won’t freak out about living in a cabin with another adult and a squad of elementary or middle schoolers in the pristine rolling hills of the “driftless area” (Google it) in beautiful southwestern WI. CERTIFICATIONS CPR and First Aid required (don’t sweat it you can acquire this through PEAK) EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE High School diploma / GED required. Previous experience working with children preferred (paid or volunteer experience...we might even count watching your siblings or cousins). PHYSICAL DEMANDS/WORKING CONDITIONS OK we’re going to level with you...it’s camp. There’s limited to no air conditioning (but there is a pool...and a lake...and squirt guns...and a giant slip and slide). There’s super limited wifi, almost no 4G, and definitely no 5G coverage. You won’t use your phone for anything other than music. You will be disconnected from social media. You will breathe air fresher than you have ever breathed and hear morning bird sounds you’ve only heard in the movies. You will be all up in nature. You have to be cool with walking a long distance pretty regularly and you may be singing off-key songs or playing tag on that walk. You’re going to be a member of a really close community. You will share a room, and a cabin with a bunch of other people. You will eat meals together family style. You will bring your whole self and will probably share a lot of that with the people you work with. You will probably make some new best friends...maybe even meet your life partner along the way (it’s happened). We hope you are OK with all that. Additional Comments: We value diversity and inclusivity. PEAK believes in the power of a diverse and aligned team. We are an equal employment opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, gender, national origin, disability status, protected veteran status or any other characteristic protected by law. The above job description is not intended as, nor should it be construed as, exhaustive of all responsibilities, skills, efforts, or working conditions associated with this job.
