SUSPECT ARRESTED FOR ARSON
Berkeley, California (Friday, March 12, 2021) - On the morning of March 11th, officers responded to the 1500 block of Stuart Street to check on the welfare of a person who was acting erratically in the rear unit of a duplex. According to neighbors, they heard a man inside the residence yelling, banging on walls, and the sound of glass breaking. When officers arrived, they tried to speak with the man but he would not open the door. After repeated attempts to speak with the man failed, officers concluded that the man was by himself and did not appear to be in any immediate danger and left the scene.
Ten minutes after the officers left the residence (10 am), the Communications Center received a call that the same duplex they responded to before was now on fire. In addition to this, a man was also seen outside of the building holding a shotgun and acting erratically.
When officers arrived, they were able to safely detain the man while the Berkeley Fire Department extinguished the flames. The man (a 34-year-old Berkeley man) was arrested on suspicion of arson and carrying a loaded firearm.
