I need help with 8 kittens

At thanksgiving someone slipped some drugs into my son's drink. I completely scrambled his brain, and he spent two months in the hospital. Just before that he had taken in a stray that kept showing up at his house, and the cat had kittens. As you can imagine, I have been beside myself... He is starting to do better, and now I have to deal with getting him back home and trying to get his life pieced back together. The cats are an issue. Not having hit my "priority list", I have been going to his place and feeding, watering and taking care of them. They are way too many cats for his small apartment. I have tried shelters, but they have waiting lists and fees that with medical bills and trying to keep his house afloat I just can't afford. I talked to vets and the best price I can get is $180 for shots and getting them fixed. I can't afford that, and even if I could I still don't know what to do with the cats. I am really beside myself dealing with all of this, and can't figure out what to do with the cats. Can anyone please help me find a solution? Between all the medical bills, the stress of the situation, not knowing if my son will have permanent brain damage, etc. I may not be thinking well and overlooking an option? I'm begging the "hive mind" to help me figure this out.
