Description

Guided outdoor tour of Geer Cemetery In Plain Sight is an outdoor exhibit at Durham's Geer Cemetery that tells stories from this sacred and historic African American burial ground while allowing visitors to experience its natural beauty. Running from late January to early March, the exhibit challenges us to confront the persistence of long-standing racial inequity that extends from life into death, resulting in the precarious state of the cemetery and years of community-based efforts to preserve and dignify it. Panels positioned along the old carriage track through Geer Cemetery illuminate a history too often unseen and uncelebrated--stories of the cemetery, the African American citizens buried there, and the role they played in building Durham as we know it today. Geer Cemetery speaks to legacies of enslavement and inequity, but also to the perseverance, love, faith, dedication, joys and sorrows of Black Durham. Join us outdoors to view the "In Plain Sight" exhibit with a small group, socially distant guided tour led by a member of the Friends of Geer Cemetery. For more information, please visit the exhibit website. Each tour group is limited to 10 people. Registration is required! Tours are scheduled for January 30th, February 13th, and February 27th at 10 am, 11:30 am, 1:00 pm, and 2:30 pm each day.
