Description

Welcome to our bi-weekly wine tasting event at the Flying Fig! This week we'll be tasting 4 wines from the Demarie family winery. In this week's tasting event we'll be exploring wines that represent the diverse expression of varietals grown in Piedmont, Italy (aka the "wine rainbow). These wines have been organically farmed and produced with low intervention methods that showcase the traditions of classic winemaking in the Langhe region. The Wines: 1. Luigi "Pét-Nat" - Short for the French term "pétillant naturel" a "natural sparkling wine" or Méthod Ancestrale because it is believed to be a very ancient style of winemaking. The Luigi is a blend of 70% Arneis and 30% Nebbiolo with notes of bright berries, fresh bread, orange blossom and mandarin peel. 2. Arneis - Crisp white wine with a big aromatic bouquet on the nose and full, well-balanced flavor. 3. Sabbia - Orange Arneis - Rich and full bodied, this highly unique bottling ferments in 5-year-old French barriques with skins and seeds. The process results in a beautiful natural wine with complex aromas and flavors. The wine's sand color mirrors the vineyard's soil color and is the inspiration for the name- "Sabbia"- meaning "sand" in Italian. 4. Nebbiolo - This is a lighter, more feminine expression of Nebbiolo. Unoaked (which is a rarity amount nebbiolo producers) and medium-bodied with classic violet and rose petal notes that the varietal is known for. Three Generations of Demarie Giovanni family have called the region and the village of Vezza d'Alba home. The family's hard work, expertise and love of winemaking have, since it's founding in 1957, carved out 74 acres that yield spot-on examples of the region's special terroir. Their winery is on the Roero side of the Tanaro River with vineyards on both sides of the river in 14 different locations throughout Piedmont, Italy. Paola & Monica run the family winery with Paolo's brother Aldo Demarie.
