Description

Ride to honor women who fought for the right to vote and worked in other ways to improve Alexandria Which city school is named after an Alexandrian woman who taught for more than 50 years? Which park honors an Alexandrian woman who marched and participated in sit-ins to integrate libraries, restaurants, banks, and fire and police departments? Which spot in Alexandria was the site of a pivotal court hearing for suffragists arrested for protesting in front of the White House in 1917? Come find out about female community leaders and Alexandria's role in the women's suffrage movement on this free bike ride organized by the Alexandria Bicycle and Pedestrian Advisory Committee, Alexandria Celebrates Women, and the Alexandria Spokeswomen. We'll meet at Jones Point Park, then hop on our bikes and ride to parks, schools, and other city facilities named after notable Alexandrian women. If you participated in our women's history ride in August 2020, most of the historic sites will differ from that ride. The route is about 14 miles, with a mix of neighborhood streets and bike lanes: https://ridewithgps.com/routes/35176189. The last half of the ride involves some hills and some busier streets, but we'll ride as a group to help keep everyone safe. Riders of all ages and abilities are welcome. Bring a functioning bike, a helmet, water, a face covering, and hand sanitizer. You'll be asked to sign a waiver before the ride. For everyone's health and safety, we'll take the following precautions: -- riding in a small group of 10 riders maximum (1 ride leader, 1 sweep, and 8 participants) -- requiring participants to sign up in advance for a specific time slot starting at 9:00, 9:30, 10:00, or 10:30 a.m. -- asking everyone to self-screen and not ride if they've experienced symptoms of covid or been exposed to a known covid case within the last 14 days -- asking people to wear masks during the stops, and also while riding if they can breathe comfortably while doing so -- asking people to give each other at least 10 feet of space while riding -- keeping an eye on local covid conditions, and cancelling the ride if needed
