Description

What's one of the simplest, high-impact ways to save water and help protect the Aquidneck Island watershed? Using a rain barrel at home! Turn a used fifty gallon container into a rain barrel for your home! We are sponsoring TWO rain barrel workshops: April 24 at Middletown Public Works (19 Berkeley Ave, Middletown, RI)May 1 in Bristol, RI (location to be announced)To sign up for the Bristol workshop click here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/make-your-own-rain-barrel-bristol-workshop-tickets-145926607411 You will be provided with everything you need to build your own rain barrel. We will guide you through the process of converting these containers into allies for a cleaner Narragansett Bay. We will begin with a presentation on how home lawn and garden practices impact our waters and how we can make a difference and will include hands-on prepping and painting of the rain barrels. Containers generously provided by Coca-Cola. $40/barrel Masks are required at the event and physical distancing will be observed. Arrival times are staggered to reduce contact. ------------------------------------------ For conservation and for pollution prevention, installing a rain barrel to collect and store rainwater for use on your lawn and gardens is a simple but powerful way to make a difference for the Aquidneck Island and Narragansett Bay. Lawn and garden watering typically makes up 40% of total summer household water usage, according to the EPA. Plus, the biggest threat to our waters today is polluted runoff water that runs off our roofs and into our streets and alleys, carrying all the oil, sediment and other contaminants that it picks up along the way into our lakes, rivers and streams. The Eastern Rhode Island Conservation District (ERICD) is a non-profit, quasi-public organization that functions as a facilitator for meeting the needs of the local land user in the conservation of soil, water and other related natural resources.
