LA GRANGE PARK, IL — A 20-year-old La Grange Park man was arrested after he arranged to buy a van from someone and then carjacked the person at gunpoint, authorities said Thursday. On March 9, the man, identified as David Herman Jr., arranged to meet the seller of a Ford E-250 van at a gas station, according to a Cook County Sheriff's Office news release. Herman asked to take the van on a test drive to his bank to withdraw the money for the vehicle, the release said. While on the test drive, Herman pulled in the parking lot of Zoo Woods Forest Preserve in Riverside under the pretense of checking the engine a second time, according to the release. After doing so, Herman agreed to buy the van. When the seller tried to re-enter the van, Herman was holding a handgun, the release said. The seller then ran away and called police. About 1 a.m. the next day, a state police officer saw a Ford E-250 crashed on the side of Interstate 80. It was identified as having been stolen. Herman was then arrested on a charge of aggravated vehicular hijacking and taken to the Sheriff's Office's headquarters, according to the release. A judge set his bail at $150,000.
