Press release from the New York Public Library: march-11-2021 Starting in March 2021, the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Fellowship Program will fund five fellows annually to further scholarship in the humanities using NYPL's unparalleled collections Media Contact: Angela Montefinise / [email protected] MARCH 11, 2021 -- Dr. Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel and Ambassador Carl Spielvogel have given The New York Public Library a generous gift to establish important new fellowships for humanities researchers at the Library's Stephen A. Schwarzman Building on Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street. The Diamonstein-Spielvogel Fellowships will sponsor five fellows each year (a total of 26 over five years) whose work will benefit directly from access to the outstanding collections at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building. The Fellowship Program will be open to Ph.D. candidates, post-Doctoral scholars, and independent researchers studying the humanities and the history, literature, and culture of peoples represented through the collections of the Library. Fellows will receive a generous monthly stipend, as well as a dedicated desk in the building's recently renovated Center for Research in the Humanities. With a fellowship duration of four months, mirroring the typical length of one academic semester, the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Fellowships provide a meaningful platform for the fellows' scholarship and research, with an added benefit for the public: fellows will be required to make public presentations, related to their work to advance knowledge and ideas in the humanities. "The Diamonstein-Spielvogel Foundation is pleased to continue and extend our long-term commitment to the common good and public interest, by expanding our support of one of New York City's premiere cultural resources," said Barbaralee Diamonstein-Spielvogel. "The New York Public Library's commitment to inclusiveness, social equity, community service, and accessibility, coupled with its internationally-admired collections, make it one of the key institutions for fostering scholarship and study at all ages – from kindergarten to post-doctoral research. We are gratified that this gift will assist the Library in its important mission, to sustain intellectual growth through research." "The New York Public Library is deeply grateful to the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Foundation for its support, vision, and generosity," said Anthony W. Marx, president of The New York Public Library. "Supporting research in the humanities has always been crucial to nourishing the growth of our culture and reflecting on our history; our current world, showcasing the clear need for deeper understanding of each other, has accentuated that importance. This new fellowship is another way that the Library can support progress and scholarship in this area, connect scholars with our remarkable collections, and spark thoughtful discussion with the public. We are so thankful for the opportunity." More information, including how to apply for the Diamonstein-Spielvogel Fellowship Program, is available at nypl.org/fellowships.
