Too Fast, Police Furious, Warn About Dangers Of Street Racing

DENVER, CO —On January 22, a Denver police traffic operations officer patrolling Interstate 25 observed two cars street racing, and he pulled one over for going 105 mph. The driver, 21-year-old Erika Duran Cabrera, was cited for drag racing and her vehicle was detained under the Public Nuisances Abatement Ordinance. This is just one of the potential consequences of drag racing, and some of the others are much worse. This week, the Denver Police Department has sent out a release reminding drivers and passengers about the dangers of speed contests, which increase the likelihood of injury and death in crashes. Additionally, large gatherings where these races take place, can result in other crimes and violence, according to police. Those who get caught drag racing, police said, risk losing up to 12 points on their driver's license, can incur fines up to $999 and can have their vehicles impounded. The Denver police said it's on the lookout for street racing events. The department has dedicated resources to help find and disrupt these gatherings, and officers won't hesitate to penalize those involved in these illegal activities. The department even has the use of a helicopter to assist in its fight against drag racing. "The goal of the Denver Police Department is deterrence of these dangerous behaviors," Police Chief Paul M. Pazen said. "There is no winning in drag racing in Denver, only losing – losing points on your driver's license, losing money towards fines, losing your vehicle, and worse – losing one's life."
