Boulder Police Make First Riot Arrest, Seek Help ID'ing Others

BOULDER, CO —The Boulder Police Department on Wednesday announced the first arrest related to the riot that took place last weekend in University Hill, and they said more arrests are expected in the coming days. The police also asked for the public's help in identifying others who created trouble during the large disturbance, releasing photos and videos from the riot featuring people they hope to find. Henry Chardack, 20, was arrested and charged with felony first degree criminal trespass, misdemeanor criminal mischief and misdemeanor engaging in a riot. The riots took place Saturday night when a large student party escalated into confrontations with police. Authorities estimated between 500 and 800 people, mostly students, were assembled during the height of the disturbance. Rioters threw rocks and bottles at police on multiple occasions and smashed the windshield of an armored vehicle. The BPD said three of its officers suffered minor injuries, and that the SWAT team was called to the scene. The police also were forced to deploy two cannisters of smoke and one canister of CS Tear Gas in addition using pepperball projectiles directed at the ground near the rioters. According to police, detectives are continuing their investigation into Saturday's events, and are looking for at least 10 others identified as being involved in riot-related crimes. They hope to make more arrests in the coming days. The BPD also released photos and videos of people they are trying to identify, including one male who threatened to shoot a BPD officer.
