Description

Press release from the City of Monrovia: March 09, 2021 A cold storm system will bring rain to the Los Angeles region later today, Tuesday, March 9, through the evening of Thursday, March 11. The National Weather Service anticipates an accumulation of up to 1.5 inches of rain in the foothills area, with possible brief periods of heavy downpours. In light of this forecast, the LA County Department of Public Works issued a Phase I Debris and Mudflow Potential Forecast for the area of Monrovia that is in the neighborhood of Ridgeside Drive and Oakglade Drive. A Phase I forecast indicates the possibility of minor to moderate flooding and mudflow/sediment deposition on these streets and below burned hillsides. At the beginning of February, city staff coordinated the placement of approximately 1,700 feet of K-Rail between the neighborhood and Monrovia Canyon Park to mitigate the impacts of any debris and mudflows. The goal of these K-Rail placements are to keep any and all flows off public and private property, and divert the mud and debris onto a street where it will be managed and removed by the City and County. In the event that there are mud and debris flow, both the LA County Department of Public Works and City of Monrovia Public Works will mobilize resources to respond to any mud and debris flow activities.
