Press release from the City Of Davis: March 10, 2021 2:43 pm The City of Davis is accepting nominations for its annual Environmental Recognition Award. Nominations are due Thursday, March 18. Each year, the City recognizes community contributions to Davis' environmental quality of life and overall sustainability efforts. These environmental awards, in their 27th consecutive year, were started in 1995 by the Natural Resources Commission and are presented each year by the Davis City Council. Nominations may be made in three categories: individual/group, business and non-profit organization, agency or school. Additionally, a special category, the Environmental Legacy Award, may be presented for sustainability efforts that have made a difference as part of Davis' history. For questions, contact Kerry Loux, Sustainability Coordinator in the Community Development and Sustainability department, at [email protected].  "Recognition of environmental stewardship, community engagement and climate justice are a significant way to acknowledge and encourage civic participation," said Mayor Gloria Partida. "It is especially fitting that the awards will be presented at the City Council meeting on Earth Day this year." Last year's winners were: Nugget Markets (Business category) honored for the company's major strides in energy savings, water conservation and food-waste diversion; Cool Davis (Non-profit category) recognized for its work in partnership with the City of Davis to achieve climate action goals; Jean Jackman, a nature columnist for The Davis Enterprise, and a panel of local energy experts who assisted Valley Clean Energy (Individual/group category). In addition, two special awards were given last year for Empowering Youth in Climate Action. Awardees in this special category were Deb Bruns, who lead led innovative projects, networking and promotion of opportunities to engage in environmental change and Christal Waters' whose quest to get more students on bikes and out of cars has had the overarching goal of reducing our community's carbon footprint.  The Environmental Legacy Award, initiated in 2017 for the City's centennial year, are intended to recognize events, programs or milestones that have made a significant difference in Davis' environmental quality of life over the course of the City's history. The first four Legacy Awards were: in 2020,  the creation of the recycling program in Davis 50 years ago;  in 2019, the City honored the community engagement that supported creation of Central Park expansion and Central Park Gardens; in 2018, Unitrans received the award on the 50th anniversary of this UC Davis/Davis community bus service; and in 2017, the first Legacy Award recognized the 50th anniversary Davis' implementation of bike lanes  ̶  the first bike lane installations in the nation.
