DOUGLASVILLE, GA — Five dollar stores may be enough for the city of Douglasville. In a work session planned for Thursday evening, city leaders have proposed a 90-day moratorium on building any more so-called "small box discount stores" to study their impact. Already there are five such stores described as being 12,000 square feet or less in size, selling a variety of convenience items of $10 or less, without gasoline sales that mark the typical convenience store, noted in the March 1 meeting, according to the agenda for the work session. "Prior to that meeting, the City Council has expressed concern over the impact that a high concentration of dollar general stores would have on the community and on the property values," the background of the agenda item reads. City officials noted that similar moratoriums on dollar stores have been used in DeKalb County. It is unclear whether other businesses have approached the City to move in. The council will discuss the ordinance to suspend licensing any more dollar stores through June during the Legislative Work session to begin Thursday at 6 p.m. at Douglasville City Hall, 6700 Church Street.
