Description
BIRMINGHAM, AL — A homicide investigation surrounding a shooting outside a car wash in east Birmingham has concluded that the death of Detraio Whorton was a justifiable homicide. The shooting occurred Feb. 25 at the corner of 1st Avenue and Parkway East.
The preliminary investigation indicates that 27-year-old Detraio Whorton exited his vehicle and engaged in an altercation with another person, which escalated to gunfire, according to Sgt. Rod Mauldin of the Birmingham Police Department. Whorton was shot and returned to his vehicle and collapsed in the driver seat.
Mauldin said evidence presented to the Jefferson County District Attorney's Office prompted the reclassification of the case from a murder investigation to a justifiable homicide.
Of the 17 homicide investigations by the Birmingham PD in 2021, this is the first one classified as justifiable.
