PEABODY, MA — Peabody High Athletic Directors Bob Bua told Patch two weeks ago that it would be "awesome" if the football program could play all seven games scheduled as part of the Fall 2 coronavirus-delayed season. The hope now for the Tanners will be to find a way to play the final six contests after Friday's season opener was canceled. The Peabody athletic department gave no reason for the cancellation when it was posted on Twitter Tuesday afternoon. Friday nights football game vs @Winthropvikings has been cancelled.— PVMHS Tanner Athletics (@TannerAthletics) March 9, 2021 The Peabody volleyball team did play Marblehead on Tuesday. Winthrop, which postponed all sports from the traditional fall season to Fall 2 out of virus concerns, also played volleyball and soccer on Tuesday. As of Tuesday, the Northeastern Conference game between Gloucester and Saugus was shifted from Friday to Saturday, but all other games remain on as scheduled. Peabody is now set to open the six-game season against Peabody at the school's stadium on March 20 at 11 a.m. "I can't count the number of kids and parents who have come up to me and said they are just appreciative of the opportunity to play," Bua told Patch in February. "Our job is to create as many opportunities this year to — for lack of a better term — have something 'normal' that they can do." Did you find this article useful?
