Description
NEWPORT, RI — The all-electronic tolling pilot program on the Pell Bridge in Newport ends this weekend. After Sunday, tolling booths on the eastbound side of the bridge will reopen during daytime hours.
All-electronic tolling will remain in place on both sides of the bridge from 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. During that time, drivers will have their toll billed by their EZ Pass transponder, or mailed to the address on file for their license plate if they do not have one.
The pilot program started Feb. 14. During that time, eastbound toll booths were closed, and all traffic was routed through EZ Pass lanes. Toll amounts on mailed bills were the same as they would have been had the toll booths been open.
Once the pilot program wraps up, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority will analyze the data from the four weeks to help determine the best approach to tolling going forward.
