Description
6th Annual Sophie's Day Golf Tournament Join us for Sophie's Day Golf Tournament We golf for Sophie Lee and all the other blood cancer patients and surviors. We golf in memory of those that lost their battle to blood cancer. Bravery Knows No Age At a young age, Sophie Lee began having intermittent leg pain, with no other acute issues. Then at the age of five, since Sophie was still experiencing these odd pains, her family was referred to hematology for more tests. After an initial round of normal results, her hematologist recommended an additional test - bone marrow aspiration – which led to the unexpected diagnosis of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), a precursor for Acute Myeloid Leukemia. Among the four types of leukemia, this has the lowest survival rate, and the estimated incidence of pediatric MDS varies from 1 to 4 cases per million per year. So literally one in a million. And the only treatment option would be a bone marrow transplant, as soon as possible. Sophie had to leave kindergarten, brave a stem cell transplant, and endure rounds of chemo, with its own set of complications for even the strongest. Surviving & Thriving Sophie celebrated her 11th birthday this year! And while it has been a tough transition adjusting to her new “normal,” she is working to increase physical and mental strength through bike rides, play dates with friends, including the invaluable support of teachers, doctors, and family. Tony and Judy Lee started this tournament in 2015 as a grassroots effort to give back and raise awareness for bone marrow testing and blood cancers like Sophie's. Since our first tournament in 2015, we’ve raised over $125,000 with 100% of proceeds going to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, in conjunction with its Annual Man & Woman of the Year Campaign. How You Can Help – Sponsor, Golf or Donate Be a sponsor, join us for golf or donate an auction item! Last year we had over 120 golfers and 20+ businesses from across the valley represented.
