Description
Los Angeles, CA — A wild chase involving a hit-and-run suspect turned into a standoff after the driver crashed into multiple vehicles in Diamond Bar. The woman, who had a child in the car with her, held a SWAT Team at bay for hours before they flushed her out with teargas.
According to the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department, the chase ensued after a hit-and-run crash involving a sheriff's vehicle in Walnut. Aerial broadcast footage from the scene showed the driver speeding through the region, running red lights and sideswiping cars before a head-on crash brought it to a stop on Diamond Bar Boulevard. Still, the driver did not surrender.
For more hours, she sat in the wreckage, refusing to surrender as more than a dozen sheriff's vehicles surround the car and evacuated people from the area. Footage by KTLA shows the driver frantically moving around the interior of the vehicle and climbing into the back seat. Eventually sheriff's SWAT deputies lobbed tear gas into the car. A child was released from the car first, and the woman came out and was taken into custody.
It was not immediately clear if the hit-and-run collision is what started the chase or if deputies were already pursuing the driver when the crash occurred.
Drivers are advised to avoid the area as authorities attempt to bring the suspect into custody.
