Press release from the City of Beaverton: March 10, 2021 BEAVERTON, Ore. – Beaverton City Library will welcome national racial justice speaker Carol Anderson, author of White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide, for a virtual talk with community members. The virtual event is Saturday, March 20 at 6 p.m. Visit www.BeavertonLibrary.org/CarolAnderson for details and information. Advance registration is not required. The event will be accessible via Zoom. Carol Anderson is a nationally acclaimed author, scholar and civil rights advocate. She also is the Charles Howard Candler Professor of African American Studies at Emory University. White Rage: The Unspoken Truth of Our Racial Divide is a New York Times Bestseller, Washington Post Notable Book of 2016, and a National Book Critics Circle Award winner. "We're thrilled to have this opportunity to host such an important contemporary voice on racial justice. Dr. Anderson's historical and policy analysis is so profound and relevant today," said Alexis Ball, Equity and Inclusion Manager. "Our community has asked for more opportunities to learn and engage in this conversation and we think this will be a great extension of the programming the city has offered over the past few months." Since 1865 and the passage of the Thirteenth Amendment, every time African Americans have made advances toward full participation in our democracy, white reaction has fueled a deliberate relentless rollback of any gains. Carefully linking historical flashpoints, from post-Civil War Black Codes to expressions of white rage after the election of America's first black president, Carol Anderson renders visible the long lineage of white rage and the different names under which it hides. The event is sponsored by the city in partnership with Beaverton City Library and made possible by funding from the CARES Act Mental Health & Community Psyche Grant.
