BERKELEY, CA — A suspect in a South Campus stabbing early Saturday morning was arrested, Berkeley police said. At around 1:45 a.m., three male UC Berkeley students in their 20s were walking on Hillegass Avenue (just south of Dwight Way) when two or three suspects approached them, leading to a physical altercation, police said. One man was stabbed in the back with a knife and another struck in the head with a hard object according to police. The stabbing victim was hospitalized, police said. He is expected to recover. The man who was struck in the head was medically evaluated at the scene, police said. About an hour later, Oakland police contacted a man who claimed he was involved in an incident at People's Park and summoned Berkeley officers to the 5900 block of Shattuck Avenue, police said. An investigation led to the arrest of a 28-year-old male suspect with no known address, police said. The suspect was arrested on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, battery causing injury and outstanding arrest warrant according to police. The Alameda County District Attorney's Office on Tuesday charged the suspect with assault with a deadly weapon including special allegations for causing great bodily injury and a special allegation for the commission of a crime while on bail or own recognizance, police said.
