The world needs more vaccines. Pharmaceutical patent monopolies are standing in the way, artificially limiting production and raising prices.
While countries in the Global South support a global waiver of intellectual property rights, the U.S. and other wealthy nations are blocking these efforts. On March 11, the World Trade Organization sub-committee on Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property (TRIPS) meets, and has a chance to save lives by providing such a global IP waiver.
Rich countries like the U.S. and Canada have been hoarding supplies of vaccine to the detriment of low-income countries, and this must end. We must call on the Biden administration to support global solidarity now, and stop protecting corporate profits.
Moderna still has the chance to voluntarily share information on how to make the 100% publicly funded vaccine by joining the WHO's COVID technology access pool (C-TAP).
Another world is possible: one driven by cooperation and mutual support, not Pharma greed. Open licensing will enable far more vaccines to be produced, help us turn the page on this deadly pandemic, and prepare us to fight the next one.
Join us this Thursday, March 11th, at noon, to rally for global solidarity and help stop this vaccine apartheid!
