Description
Mariners Adventure Camp will give your child the experience of a lifetime aboard the schooner Mary E. Give your child the experience of a lifetime aboard the schooner Mary E, learning the traditional skills that were required to build and sail this historic ship. Campers, ages 11-14, will join the ship's crew for this five-day, immersive program. Each day campers will spend a portion of their day exploring and developing the traditional skills of the shipwright on the grounds of the museum's historic Percy & Small Shipyard. Campers will make treenails, try blacksmithing, and steam-bend wood, along with other traditional skills. The second half of their day will be spent dockside and underway aboard Mary E, where campers will learn to handle dock lines, raise and trim sails, read charts and plot courses, tie essential knots, and take the wheel. Under the guidance of our professional crew and Coast Guard-licensed Captain, campers will put those lessons to work on daily sails down the Kennebec River. Campers will leave this unique experience with a greater understanding of teamwork, leadership, stewardship, and traditional skills. There are two sessions of Mariners Adventure Camp for students ages 11-14 years old. Camp runs from 9 am to 4:30 pm, August 9-13 and August 16-21. Early drop-off and late pick-up is available (8 am to 5:30 pm) for an additional $25. Campers must bring a lunch. A mid-morning snack will be provided. Campers should be prepared for indoor and outdoor activities each day. All CDC guidelines will be followed. No previous sailing experience is required. *Sailing time is weather dependent. Mary E is owned and operated by Maine Maritime Museum and inspected by the US Coast Guard. Though traditional in operation and construction, Mary E carries modern navigation and safety equipment. This program is made possible thanks to support from the Twombly Family
