Description
MCYC Urban Stream Adventure for UC Students and Interns MCYC extends a special invitation to UC students and interns who are currently working with Mill Creek Alliance to experience the mystery of the creek first hand. Paddling with the seasoned guides of the Mill Creek Yacht Club is the best way to experience the wonders of the Mill Creek while learning about our long-abused but surprisingly resurgent urban stream. Join the Commodore and other Yacht Club veterans on Saturday, March 27th, as we explore the Mill Creek by boat. On this urban stream adventure you will gain panoramic views of stream channelization, enjoy the beauty of tree-lined riparian corridor, and see first hand what all the buzz is about. Due to COVID19 restrictions, participants will paddle one direction and either pedal or walk the other direction for this trip, eliminating the need to shuttle from start to finish in a vehicle and break the 6 feet distance rule. As an alternative, you and a buddy can stage vehicles on both ends and eliminate the need to walk or pedal. The paddling voyage will commence in Northside near Mitchell Avenue and finish at the Yellow Bridge at Mill Creek Road in South Cumminsville, a distance of about 2.5 miles each way. We will spend about 3 hours on the water with educational stops along the way, plus about an hour of combined time on the land before and after paddling. Water level may create need for last minute changes in plan and/or dragging of canoes at times. Registration for the paddle is open now through noon on Friday March 26th, or until all available seats have been reserved. Register today, seats are limited! Should the registration fee present an obstacle for your participation, scholarships are available. Contact us for more information.Prepare for an unforgettable adventure on the Mill Creek. Contact Linda Keller at the Mill Creek Alliance at [email protected] or 513-563-8800 with questions about the event. See below for important safety information before registering*. *Ohio EPA recommends no contact with waters of the Mill Creek because it can have high levels of fecal coliform bacteria and other pathogens from time to time, especially within 48 to 72 hours of a rainstorm heavy enough to cause combined sewer overflows. It is your personal choice on whether to participate, based largely on the strength of your immune system and your willingness to take a calculated risk. If you have an open cut or weakened immunities, you should not go. You should be 18 or older to be on the water with us. You will need to be sure-footed in some places. Be ready to climb out of the canoe to get past shallow spots and low-head dams. Potential safety hazards include sudden drop-offs, hidden holes, foot entrapments, slippery algae, submerged obstacles, jagged objects and sealed bottles with volatile methadone ingredients. Germicidal gel and a simple first-aid kit will be available.
