Description

Orientation and information for EMPFs and EMTFs to operate as a Single Resource on Wildland Fires. This class is for firefighters who will function as an EMTF or EMPF. Topics include position overview; supplies and equipment; assignments; lessons learned; Medical Unit Leader expectations; communications; working with helicopters and REMS, documentation; navigation; safety; and medical issues related to wildland fire and providing care in remote locations. Students should bring wildland gear (including IRPG) and (if available) a tool, for a training exercise the second day of class, weather permitting. Sessions will run from 0800 to no later than 1700 each day. A mobile device (phone or tablet) with Avenza installed will be helpful. There is no certification by the State Fire Marshal. This course follows FIRESCOPE guidelines (ICS 702). Students will receive a certificate of attendance. Due to COVID-19 restrictions, class size is limited to 15. A wait list is available in case of cancellations or increase in classroom capacity (which may require proof of vaccination). Additional sessions will be scheduled if there is demand. Lead instructor, Nick Arnett, is an EMTF and MEDL-T for the U.S. Forest Service and an EMTF and REMS staff for Wilderness Medics Inc. He is a firefighter/EMT with Spring Valley Fire and a former paramedic initially licensed in 1976. Arnett also supports federal, state, and local agencies with Critical Incident Stress Management (CISM) and peer support services and instruction. He is the author of four books, including the most widely used public safety CISM pocket guide.
