Description

ELK COUNTY, PA — FBI agents were searching for Civil War-era gold when they dug up a remote Pennsylvania location in 2018, federal government documents recently released reveal. The 1863 shipment of gold disappeared on its way to the U.S. Mint in Philadelphia. The FBI refused to confirm precisely why the excavation occurred, according to the Associated Press via NBC 10 Philadelphia. Periodically, the agency would say it was there to excavate what may have been a cultural heritage site. The father-son team who brought federal agents to the site has successfully sued to obtain government emails regarding the dig, which were provided to the Associated Press through their attorney.
