CLEVELAND HEIGHTS, OH — Cleveland Heights' move to automated trash collection should be completed by October 2021, city officials announced. As the transition is implemented, residents will receive a 96-gallon trash can and a 65-gallon recycling can. Seniors will have the option to receive a 65-gallon trash can instead of a 96-gallon can. Large households will be able to buy a second 96-gallon can. City officials said more information on refuse can options will be announced in coming months. Currently, Cleveland Heights residents must put bagged trash and recycling on the curb during their assigned collection day. Residents have long complained this process has led to loose trash drifting through the city and increased wild animal problems. After the Refuse and Recycling Taskforce, composed of residents, recommended migrating to automated trash collection and the use of bins, city officials announced it was time for a change. The move to automated trash collection and usable cans will have drawbacks. Four service department jobs will be eliminated in the transition, with workers either being reassigned to other divisions or not replaced when they leave. Residents sanitation fees will also increase from $11.50 per month to $16.17 per month during the first year of automated collection.
