BERKELEY, CA – A resolution to make Kamala Harris' childhood Berkeley home eligible for landmark status will go before the City Council Tuesday. The resolution would change the requirement for landmark status to make the Bancroft Way home America's first Black and Southeast Asian woman to serve as vice president eligible. The resolution authored by Councilmember Kate Harrison and co-sponsored by Councilmember Sophie Hahn would include residences or structural sites "of importance for notable community members who contributed to the cultural and historic values of Berkeley, including to allow the childhood home of Vice President Kamala Harris to be eligible for designation." The city currently grants historic landmark status to sites viewed to be of historical significance, The San Francisco Chronicle reports. Should the resolution pass, an application to grant Harris' home landmark status would go before the City Council and Landmarks Preservation Commission for approval, The Chronicle reports.
